Environmental Sustainability in a Remote Workplace: What It Looks Like For Us

What does environmental responsibility look like for a remote business?

Work from home and sustainability

As a B Corp, we’re committed to doing business for good–which means we strive to make a difference in how we do business. And this doesn’t stop at our values when it comes to our clients and our team. We’re also committed to environmental sustainability.

It might look a little different for us as we’re operating on a fully remote basis–but our commitment to environmental sustainability is no less important. In fact, it challenges us to be even more intentional about how we encourage environmentally responsible practices into our day-to-day operations.

In this blog, we share what environmental responsibility can look like for a remote company. Are you running a remote team? Or maybe you’re a fellow B Corp business who wants practical ideas for reducing your environmental footprint. We hope these examples–and how we live them every day–show that what environmental responsibility looks like for remote businesses.

Digital-first, paperless initiatives

One of the most effective ways we reduce our footprint is by going paperless. Remote work lends itself to digital operations, and we’ve fully embraced that across our systems:

  • We sign contracts electronically using platforms like DocuSign.
  • Our team stores and collaborates on documents using cloud-based tools like SharePoint.
  • We take meeting notes, plan projects, and communicate entirely online—no sticky notes or paper memos in sight.

It’s simple, it saves time, and it cuts unnecessary waste. For us, paperless operations aren’t just good for the environment—they also make things easier to manage. It’s a win for efficiency and the environment.

Waste reduction when working from home

Working from home doesn’t mean that waste goes away. It just shifts the responsibility of managing waste to each team member. We support the team by providing them with education and resources to help reduce everyday waste in their home offices and kitchens.

Practical ways we reduce waste in our home offices:

  • Encouraging reusable alternatives to single-use items
  • Sharing recycling guides based on local council services
  • Providing practical composting tips for food scraps and biodegradable materials

Dealing with e-waste

The convenience of technology comes with the downside of creating waste. Electronic waste (or e-waste includes discarded electronics like laptops, monitors, phones, keyboards, chargers, and all the other tech accessories we’re used to. Many of these contain materials that are harmful to the environment if not disposed of properly.

We actively encourage responsible e-waste disposal through:

  • Annual e-waste collection days for secure, ethical recycling
  • Donating working but unused equipment to community programs
  • Using manufacturer trade-in or recycling programs to extend tech lifecycles

As a company, we take a thoughtful approach to our tech usage and do our best to reduce unnecessary landfill and ensure e-waste is managed responsibily.

Supporting sustainable home offices

As we mainly work from our home offices, we also support our team in making their home offices more eco-friendly as much as possible. Some the initiatives we have in our Environmental Sustainability Policy include:

  • Supplying energy-efficient laptops to team members and encouraging them to turn power-saving settings on
  • Unplugging electronics when not in use
  • Choosing second-hand or sustainably sourced furniture for their home office space

None of these are requirements though.  The nature of our remote work models means that every team member’s home office setup is different. However, we do aim to make it easier for the team to build greener habits, at work and beyond.

It’s not just a policy, it’s a mindset

Our environmental policy outlines all of this and more, but in reality, it’s about mindset. Sustainability isn’t something we “add on” to the way we work. It’s something we aim to embed, gradually and meaningfully, into how we work every day.

Being a remote team doesn’t exempt us from environmental responsibility—it just shifts how we approach it. And if you’re a remote or hybrid business, know that you can make a difference too, even without solar panels or office recycling stations.
